An SSL certificate is an electronic digital identity for a site hosted on a server and software for its operation; it allows you to securely exchange information between the site and the client's browser. The presence of such a signature informs all site visitors that they are dealing with a secure data transmission channel and their personal data will not be protected during data exchange with the site.

When the site is running in an unsecured mode, the information coming from the server and the browser is in clear text and can be intercepted. The security certificate for the site does not allow unauthorized persons to intercept or replace personal user data, whether it be passwords, logins, phone numbers or bank cards. An SSL certificate contributes to trust in the company and its website, and also creates a positive reputation among customers, because they receive additional guarantees that confidential information will not fall into the wrong hands.

When an SSL certificate is installed on the site, the connection between the site and the client browser becomes secure, as evidenced by the padlock icon or the green bar in the browser's address bar. This involves encrypting data by converting it to a random character set. You can decrypt such a set using the key stored on the server. Even if the fraudster intercepts the information, he will not be able to interpret it or change it.

What are SSL certificates for?
When an attempt is made to access your site, it can be spoofed by attackers even if the user correctly enters its domain name. SSL certificates eliminate the possibility of such spoofing - by viewing the certificate, the user can verify that the domain is hosting the exact site that should be there and not a duplicate. In addition, an SSL certificate allows the user to verify who the owner of the site is. It means that the user can verify that he/she is visiting the right organization's site and not the site of its duplicate. Another important feature of SSL Certificates is encryption of the Internet connection. An encrypted connection is necessary to prevent possible theft of sensitive data during transmission over the network.
Where to use SSL certificates?
It is recommended to install SSL certificates in the section of the website where users enter sensitive data, e.g. on authorisation and payment pages. Having a certificate on the site protects it from possible forgeries, as the user can always verify that the site is genuine and check who owns it.
What is the validity period of SSL certificates?
The certificate is valid for 1 year. When the SSL certificate expires, it must be renewed.
How do I view my website's SSL certificate in Google Chrome?
Before version 56 of Google Chrome, you could see your SSL certificate details by clicking on "Trusted" status. Now you can do this by pressing Ctrl Shift I or by going to "Settings" โ†’ "Advanced tools" โ†’ "Developer tools" โ†’ "Security" โ†’ "View certificate".
